AIMMM...For A Better Tomorrow

"The Nation's proper goals regarding individuals with disabilities are to assure equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency for such individuals."—The Americans with Disabilities Act, 1990.

Thanks for visiting our Web site. AIMMM's full name and mission are one and the same—Advancing Independence: Modernizing Medicare and Medicaid. We created AIMMM after serving as advisors to the U.S. Secretary for Health and Human Services and the Health Care Financing Administrator. We did this because we are convinced by our disabilities and our experiences at HHS that you cannot advance the independence of people with disabilities without working to significantly modernize both programs.

When people with disabilities—including many older Americans—talk about personal independence, we typically mean having some rather basic choice and control over our lives and futures—over where we live and how we go about our daily routines. Independence also is the ability to pursue a job and advance in one's career, without fear of losing vital health coverage and access to the assistance that might be needed to get up and out the door.

AIMMM will, therefore, work to modernize Medicare and Medicaid in a way that both programs work in a far more coordinated and explicit fashion to further the goals set out in the Americans with Disabilities Act: Assuring equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency for people with disabilities of all ages.

Our work here at AIMMM includes identifying barriers, highlighting the need for meaningful change and, most importantly, joining with others to bring about a second generation of reforms. Changes that we believe are critical for improving the health, independence and productivity of Americans with disabilities and that of our nation. And, we hope that you'll join us in working to achieve these vital goals.
