Tell Us Your Story

AIMMM is collecting stories on how Medicare and Medicaid policies are promoting or impeding the everyday ability of Americans with disabilities of all ages to live independent, healthy and productive lives in our own homes and communities. One of the most effective tools the disability community used to convince Congress to pass the ADA in 1990 was to describe and share their everyday experiences with regard to facing barriers and prejudice with their elected officials. It is time to do the same with regard to the vital need to modernize Medicare and Medicaid in ways that will help achieve the goals of the ADA.

We, therefore, invite and encourage you to tell us how the following Medicare and Medicaid policies and practices are affecting your everyday lives or that of someone you know:

  • The Medicare Homebound Restriction that says that to receive home health services you must need skilled care and be confined to home most of the time. E-mail us on this issue.
  • The Medicare Durable Medical Equipment purchasing rule that says Medicare will only purchase wheelchairs that are needed for use inside your home only. E-mail us on this issue.
  • The lack of a Prescription Drug Benefit in Medicare. E-mail us on this issue.
  • The lack of Mental Health Parity in Medicare. E-mail us on this issue.
  • The lack of Medicaid community living services in your State. E-mail us on this issue.
  • Cuts to the Medicaid program in your State. E-mail us on this issue.
  • We would like to hear from as many people with disabilities, family members and others who have views, concerns and suggestions on these matters as possible. When you e mail us, please describe in a page or less how such policies and impacting your life or that of someone you know on a daily basis and please be sure to include your name and where live. AIMMM will post whatever we receive on the Stories page of our Web site. We also compile an online summary of the stories we receive that can be used to help inform the policy debate at the federal, state and local levels.

Please e-mail us today. It will help make a world of difference for you, your family and millions other Americans with disabilities of all ages. Thanks.
